In this film, Werner Herzog uses the trusty life enigmatic character of Kasper Hauser to ask such questions as, “Who are we? “, “How do we learn? ” and “What is it to be human? ” Questions of such singular importance that neither science, logic or religious dogma can offer adequate answers. Tall truths are felt rather than analyzed and by fleshing out the very humanness of Kasper through the fabulous performance of Bruno S., we win such a sense of honest and ghastly that societal convention seems out of balance and perverse. In the ruin we net the feeling that we can only learn anything from Kasper because he looks at the world without prejudice or preconceived notions of good and irascible. The film begins with the following written introduction: “One Sunday in 1828 a primitive boy was found in the town of N. He could hardly waddle and spoke but one sentence. Later he told of being locked in a dismal cellar from birth. He had never seen a human being, a tree, a house before. To this day on one knows where he came from - or who plot him free.” Kasper becomes for “civilized” society an experiment in humanity. The only jam is that he does not reply in expected ways, therefore, there must be something contaminated with him - some scientifically explainable flaw! But through resplendent effective images we experience Kaspers humanity; the childlike joy he experiences while feeding a baby bird; tears of confusion pouring down his face after getting stung by a candle flame at the hands of those who know better; the tenderness he exhibits with an infant child. As Kasper is introduced to “high” society, essentially as a freakish novelty that can be molded into conformity through “education”, it is not he who is the true freak explain, but those who seem to be ashamed of their believe attachment to nature. Suddenly Kasper is the only non-freak in the film! Herzog seems to have learned distinguished from the tale of Kasper Hauser and has created a exquisite testament to that spirit with this film.

Not only is The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser Werner Herzog’s best film but it is without query one of the 5 greatest films of all time. This movie has some of the most amazing and mighty images ever committed to film. One of the opening shot’s is that of a wheat field blowing in the wind while Pachelbel’s Cannon plays and the following words appear on the screen; “Don’t you hear that defective screaming all around you? That screaming men call silence.” This sequence perfectly captures the essence of this film. The beauty of suffering seen through the eyes of a man that is completing untainted and untouched by society. This movie will change your life. This movie has astounding cinematography, a genius employ of music, amazing performances and Werner Herzog’s direction is wonderful.

The DVD release is the second release of the well-liked moving series (the first was released through RHINO, note: RHINO only released season 1 and the first half of season 2) and both releases has its key differences which I will discuss further in my review. It’s primary to also sign that some of the episodes for the first season were featured on DVD’s that were included with various Hasbro toy box sets released in early 2009.

For starters, the series is not based on the modern GI Joe toys that were released in the 1960’s but is based on the Hasbro toyline which started in 1982 and the laughable book series from Marvel Comics. The series was created by Ron Friedman and the first season on this DVD place comprised of three mini-series that aired in 2004-2005. The mini-series which consisted of “The M.A.S.S. Procedure”, “The Revenge of Cobra”, “The Pyramid of Darkness” and five separate episodes.

Here is a brief synopsis (no spoilers) for each episode:

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“G.I. Joe - A Staunch American Hero” is in elephantine color and presented in Dolby Digital. I have been asked by many G.I. Joe fans how Wail FACTORY’s DVD’s compare to the unique RHINO DVD’s.

In terms of video quality, there is a cramped (very cramped) dissimilarity between Scream FACTORY’s characterize quality and RHINO’s represent quality. Wail FACTORY features a cramped less compression it would seem. I was comparing the scenes and it’s very miniature. In fact, Bellow FACTORY’s version seems a wee bit brighter.

But I wanted to compare a scene in the first episode where Cobra Commander and Destro were overlooking a computer after they were looking at crystals for the M.A.S.S. method. The reason I chose that scene is because it exhibits a lot of dust and scratches, compression and wanted to behold if it was cleaned up. One thing I sight that both detached had similar issues but a main key disagreement was that the size of the dust in the RHINO version were clumpier. Granted, its there if you stay and behold at a frame but for most people, they are not going to view this. But there was no digitally remastering for those who were fervent in bright. The dust and scratches peaceful exist and are piece of the master.

I was also asked if the errors from the modern series such as two Timbers in a scene or Scarlett sporting a mind control diagram (when she wasn’t supposed to wear one, among a few errors from the unusual animation were fixed in this modern release. These errors were piece of the unusual master and is on the final slice. So, I doubt there will be any measures to apt those errors and that it’s more than likely these will permanent errors that are piece of the unique animation.

I was also asked if the opening themes were the ones featured on the new broadcast. And the opening theme for all episodes on Season 1.1 is the version with Flint pointing as starting off with his wail of “Yo Joe!” and ending with a big Cobra spaceship crashing into the ground.

As for audio quality, this is where the RHINO and Bellow FACTORY versions are quite different. The RHINO version features a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio which utilizes the surround channels and the LFE of your subwoofer and shows up on my receiver as Dolby Digital 5.1. Vocal tracks were featured on the center channel, music on the surrounds (and were louder than the dialogue track) and utilizing front channel and the subwoofer for the booms.

For the Scream FACTORY version, the audio is featured in Dolby Digital but does not seize advantage of surround channels or LFE. In fact, the setting I ended up choosing on my receiver was “All Channels on Stereo”.

Joe - The Complete Series” contains a total of eight retrospective featurettes, a content cast reunion, 25 archival Hasbro toy commercials, more GI Joe PSA’s and the live action fan film “Battle of the Serpent Stone”, plus a 1 GB “Dog-Tag” flash drive, a collectible book, two G.I. Joe Still comics and more.

JUDGMENT CALL:

Needless to say that I am quite biased when it comes to “G.I. Joe - A Right American Hero”. As a child who detached the comics and toys, as an adult, I level-headed fill many of the figures, vehicles and and box sets released from 1982 through the indicate. So, personally, the inspiring series will always be end to my heart as it was very distinguished an famous fragment of my childhood.

Like many people who grew up during the early 80’s, “G.I. Joe - A True American Hero” was an lively series that grabbed our attention because of its many characters and the personality of those characters.

Each character looked different, had different skills, various weaponry and attitude and Hasbro was quite innovative with the release of the toys. The animation encouraged us to indulge in them even further by establishing storylines that we could try to recreate. The series was the classic well-behaved vs. unsuitable storyline and it’s one thing to have these various members of G.I. Joe but the whole recognize of Cobra was honest too frigid to ignore.

Needless to say, fraction of the success and why parents loved about “G.I. Joe” was the fact that the action figures were significantly cheaper than other toy lines (with the exception of a few vehicles or play sets such as the USS Flag which were quite expensive) and they were easily accessible at your local mom and pop drug store or grocery store.

Children would know that if you bought a character, chances are that you would behold this character in action on an episode of “G.I. Joe - A Trusty American Hero” unlike other toylines at the time which unfortunately, you would glimpse only once in an though-provoking series and never contemplate again.

As for the animation and its re-release, with the release of the RHINO DVD’s over five years ago, it was a bit sad that the company didn’t effect the series when it was released. This left a lot of G.I. Joe fans frustrated and upset.

To add to the frustration, the box sets became out of print so like a flash that fans only chance of obtaining the series was through eBay and paying nearly double or triple of what the new mini-series and the individual season box sets cost. Needless to say, the RHINO releases were fair too difficult for fans to earn a gain of and priced too high for any casual fan or newbie fans to want to pay and seize for it.

But in 2009, Bawl FACTORY has done a large service for G.I. Joe fans. Fans can come by the first 22 episodes with “G.I. JOE - A Dependable AMERICAN HERO - SEASON 1.1 and the complete series for a aesthetic brand.

For those who are wondering if the series is worth the double dip, my retort is that if you want the complete series, you’re going to have to anyway (since RHINO never released the second half of Season Two) . I do miss the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio from the recent from the RHINO release but overall, there is nothing I can complain about with Yell FACTORY’s Season 1.1 release. There are enough bells and whistles included on a thin pack and really, for the ticket these will be sold for, compared to the experience that fans had to go through years ago, this is a occupy!

G.I. Joe or Cobra the enemy fans, this is one release that you won’t want to miss. “G.I. JOE - A Right AMERICAN HERO - SEASON 1.1″ is highly recommended!

A team of militant heroes codenamed “G.I. Joe” lead by the couragous Duke struggle to fight for the freedom of America and the world from the threat of the manicial terrorist organization known as COBRA lead by the detestable Cobra Commander and steel-faced fiend Destro.

This exhibit became one of the most iconic enchanting shows of the 80’s besides Transformers, Valid Ghostbusters and He-Man and is one of the best cartoons ever. The note is based on Hasbro’s action figure series worthy like “Transformers” was in 1984 but in 1983 Sunbow/Marvel animation made three annual mini-series based on the figure series which came in 1983, 1984 and finally 1985 where it lead to a successful TV intriguing series that earned high ratings among people of all ages. I adore how the reveal has shimmering writing including tons of action and ample characters from sexy Baroness, shapely Scarlett, lovable sailor Shipwreck, hard cooking and hardcore fighter Roadblock, and more which helped made this a current among all ages even in the 80’s.

This DVD has the first three Miniseries which started with 1983’s “An American Hero: The M.A.S.S. Procedure” has the debut of Destro who joins with Cobra Commander’s COBRA team as they develope a remarkable weapon called the M.A.S.S. Map which can beam and transport objects, buildings and even people to their dwelling, when Cobra decides to spend the thing to grasp a military satellite, the JOE team is on the rescue to extinguish the draw. Next “The Revenge of Cobra” has the COBRAs attacking G.I. Joe as they hatch up another defective procedure called The Weather Dominator which is a weapon that can change the worlds’s climates as now Duke, Flnt, Mutt, Roadblock, quiet but deadly Snake-Eyes and of the rest of the JOEs must disconnect the weapon from harming the Earth and finally “Pyramid of Darkness” has deadly twins Tomax and Xamot with Cobra Commander, Destro, Baroness and the COBRAs has taken over a G.I. Joe Spaceship as they consume their sattelite to effect a pyramid-like zone around the world of energy to seize electricity off the Earth and wants the world to be completly unlit unlessJoe can do something about it. Now to the right meat where the demonstrate begins starting with “Countdown For Zartan” has master of disguise Cobra member Zartan who disguises himself as a French researcher and implants a bomb within the Worldwide Defense Center building for time is ticking for the bomb as the Joes must accumulate it or else it would go into smithereens. “Red Rocket’s Glare” has the Cobra twins Tomax and Xamot who secretly occupy a company has purchased the Red Rocket food chain leaving people almost out of business but using the company secretly for a missle launching spoiled, Roadblock’s uncle and aunt are in pains of losing their business unless Roadblock can straighten things out with the conspiracy the twins are scheming. “Satellite Down” has a secrety military satellite blown out from position until a jungle by Cobra, the Joe team with Cobra have competetion to retreive it as they meet an unsusal tribe of ape-like people that also seeks the blueprint as well, “Cobra Stops the World” has Cobra Commander who has a heinous view of control the oil supplies of the world as he detonates oil tankers and supplies with a simple remote, G.I. Joe member Sparks finds out the curious frequence Cobra is using to atomize the tankers as the Joe team spend technology against technology. “Jungle Trap” has Cobra wanting to ruin all cities with hot lava from volcanic activity as a professor named Dr. Shakur has been kidnapped by Cobra Commandor as he’s forced to exercise his technology to come by to the Earth’s core to create volcanic erruptions, the Joe must go into the jungle immoral of Cobra to ruin the newest weapon and set aside the scientist. “Cobra’s Creatures” has a unique member of Cobra named High Ferq who uses a way that controls all the animals of the world to go against humans including the G.I. Joe dog Junkyard who goes bannanas, now its up to the Joes to raze the plan and even return the dog succor to it’s regular self. And finally “The Funhouse” has Flint with Bazooka, and other Joe members who are in a trap made by Cobra in a temple as they must solve a labyrinth of death and fight Cobra.

All episodes including the mini-series are digitally remastered with sizable narrate and sound with grand extras like a three fragment interview with one of the writers, Vivid is Half the Battle PSAs, G.I. Joe recent 1963 Toy Handsome presentation, printable Jungle Trap script and G.I. Joe Toy Commercials.

A beginning is a very shapely time. In 1984, the long awaited film version of Frank Herbert’s account current Dune came to the silver mask. What happened next? The worst box office trouble in history! Shaded to say it, but mostly everyone who saw Dune hated it except for the few who actually read the book! I’ve always loved this movie but if I ever said that in public I was usually beaten with mountainous rocks or a baseball bat. This review isn’t really about the narrative of the film or it’s direction. Its about the confusing truth of their actually being two editions of the 1984 film version of dune.

Now here is where the entire legal purpose to this review comes in. Many may wonder, “why was I watching this on Sci-Fi channel and the director was Alan Smithee instead of David Lynch? ” Well dinky Jimmy, the respond is complicated. David Lynch knew when he made Dune he was in effort and slit the film down incredibly to originate it fit the desired time limit. Lynch was slightly gay with this chop of the film and hoped that that would be the last he would have to do with it… Sinful!

A few years when Dune finally was on TV, a special edition version was prepared containing an HOUR of extra footage. A current narration covers the film and practically spells out every bit of information to the audience this time. The studios were ready to prove it when suddenly David Lynch says “Woa woa, I liked it the draw it was!” and refuses to have credit for this current longer version. The studio then takes out Lynch’s name and replaces it with the fallacious Alan Smithee who doesn’t exist. With me so far?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dune! Click Here

The version of Dune available on DVD and VHS is the David Lynch version which in my belief actually works better than the longer version. It cuts to the meander and doesn’t lunge as badly as Smithee’s version does. For those of you who have never seen the Alan Smithee version, its not available to lift but it’s shown on the Sci-Fi channel twice a year so there you go!

So, even though critics bombed it, audiences hated it, and David Lynch disowned the longer version, I aloof treasure this movie for some mysterious reason! If you’re the type who likes uncommon artistic movies like 12 Monkeys, 2001, or Blade Runner, you will probably delight in this. Also anime fans, this is fair up your alley! For all you other people, rep the hell out of here!

p.s. Toto’s glean is a masterpiece! Yea… of all bands… Toto…

David Lynch’s (Eraserhead, Twin Peaks) adaptation of Frank Herbert’s defining saga ‘DUNE’ may very well be, if truth be told, the most tale enterprise, and in many ways the most rewarding, of Lynch’s work thus far.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dune! Click Here

Dune is a difficult movie to review, if only because there is no easy (or maybe I should say simple) device to peep at it. At its core though DUNE tells the epic of Paul Atreides, a young man whose destiny as a Messiah of worlds echoes that of such classics like Brazil or Spartacus, where seemingly ordinary men become fabulous beings. This however is an over-simplification, DUNE is built from a collection of stories and legends that design a unusual whole -perfectly captured by Lynch.

Make no mistake, this movies begs to be seen in its new 2,35:1 widescreen format. Freddie Francis’ photography of the barren Dune world is simply fabulous, and even though some of the special effects may seem frail when compared to today’s standards, the fabulous designs by Anthony Masters will simply lift your breath away. The DVD edition, while not anamorphic, is very well presented, sporting a very high quality video transfer and reliable sound. A brief, if yet moving, collection of production notes are also included, as well as cast and crew bios and the current theatrical trailer in widescreen format.

DUNE seems boring at times and it may not be for everyone -but then that’s always been the trademark of Lynch’s work, I assume. Smooth, DUNE is an worthy example of how a complex anecdote can manufacture a Sci-Fi movie be truly sage. Couple that with the astounding designs and the fair photography and you got a winner here. Highly recommended.

In The Gigantic Sprint and The Glowing Seven, Steve McQueen gives satisfactory performances but they are more or less ensemble films. In Hurry you might argue that McQueen is the true star and the other characters, luminous as they are, encourage only to serve him, but in SEVEN he’s not even the main star. People like myself with action fever in our blood consider the world of these two films, early exposures to adrenaline pumping, and we remember them with the same intake of breath we remember the first time we jumped out of a plane or got into a fistfight.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Steve McQueen Collection! Click Here

In JUNIOR BONNER, the action is more subtle, though the rodeo background is incandescent and McQueen, a dinky more weathered, is even better than before. His tangles with Ida Lupino are legendary and she was never better than in this film, a nice valedictory on Sam Peckinpah’s section to one of Britain’s (and Hollywood’s) finest actresses, a woman who could spit out nails when she wanted to and a fitting progenitor for McQueen’s chilly see (she plays his mother) . It’s a softer and more lyrical Peckinpah film, unlike the later THE GETAWAY (also with McQueen, although not in this boxed location) .

Finally there’s Norman Jewison’s remake/remodel of Steve McQueen as a dashing, well-kept Cary Grant type in the sophisticated caper thriller THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR. To McQueen’s credit, he was able to st-r-e-t-ch his veil image to accommodate the rapier verbal wit of the screenplay as well as do his used “blue haze” hide peer. Faye Dunaway, as the inspiring heroine, is also very genuine and hardly mannered at all. When the film appeared, there was a lot of attention paid to their chess scene, which more or less frankly tried to imitate the baroque erotics of TOM JONES’ noted “eating scene” with Albert Finney. Everything in the sequence is a complex double entendre, and often the actors are photographed in intense closeup, letting their eyes do all the talking for them. It works today, even though it has itself been imitated dozens of times since. On the gripping commentary track Jewison acknowledges the prickly personae of his stars, and hints at how difficult they both could be, and he’ll construct you smile with some of his insider info.

This MGM dwelling is released at a indecent (if not quite budget) heed and has four immense films in it. The competing McQueen position may have more discs, but it has more duds too. You pay your money, and you acquire your choice!

The one word that is always stale to recount actor Steve McQueen is icy. He was the essence of frosty. The movies he made were always considered the epitome of frigid. He was a hard working, hard playing rebel who had the kind of uncertain charisma that women found exquisite and men wanted to emulate. McQueen died in 1980 but left gradual a great legacy. MGM has repackaged several of his movies in a box location that provides an enchanting cross-section of his work, that ranges from the ensemble share, The Pretty Seven to the rich, characterization of Junior Bonner that would tag his later films.

McQueen died from lung cancer at the age of 50 but left and enduring legacy slack. He continues to be a considerable admired and respected actor. This box region is a fitting reminder of the kind of range McQueen was marvelous of as an actor.

On The Shapely Seven DVD there is an audio commentary by James Coburn, Eli Wallach, producer Walter Mirisch and assistant director Robert Relyea. This is a solid commentary packed with rich anecdotes with no one person dominating.

“Guns for Hire: The Making of The Sparkling Seven,” is a retrospective gaze at the making of this classic. Most of the main cast are interviewed either in original or vintage footage in this splendid documentary.

There are two trailers and a unruffled gallery with slack the scenes photos, portraits and production and poster art. *NOTE* However, be forewarned, this is not the awesome 2-DVD Special Edition that came out awhile ago. Why MGM didn’t include this version in the box space is beyond me. Disappointing.

The Gigantic Sprint DVD features a decent making of documentary entitled, “Return to the Substantial Dash.” Interestingly, the screenplay was never finished and this upset McQueen so distinguished (because his share had not been defined) that he walked out after six weeks demanding his portion be rewritten. It took Coburn and Garner to coax him relieve.

Also included is a theatrical trailer.

The Thomas Crown Affair disc has an audio commentary by Norman Jewison. He admits that the film places an emphasis on style over thunder and saw it as an experiment in film style. This is a solid track from the old filmmaker.

There is also a trailer.

Finally, on the Junior Bonner DVD is an audio commentary by Peckinpah authors Paul Seydor, Garner Simmons and David Weddle with moderator Lop Redman. They point out the richness of the direction and how it is a very visual film with minimal exercise of dialogue, especially McQueen’s character. Like with their Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia commentary track, these guys provide an respectable analysis of the movie.

Calm, feisty redhead Gloria, self-appointed leader of the bunch, makes it sure that they like Richie more for who he is than for all the well-organized stuff he has. Richie doesn’t have great time to be glad about that, though. After the amazing holiday films “Home Alone” and “Home Alone 2″ turned child-actor Macaulay Culkin into an instant superstar, he sadly seemed incapable of having another success. 1994’s “Richie Rich” was unprejudiced one example of several films the young actor made after his large Christmas hits that failed to strike a chord with movie going audiences or critics. Sadly, “Richie Rich” is really a stout film. While not a perfect adaptation of the funny and cartoon (the villainous Van Dough is an adult exec here rather than a atrocious cousin, Gloria is unfortunately a cute but street-sassy tomboy with a last-name change rather than Richie’s sweet and femininely dressed girlfriend, and Irona the robot maid/bodyguard is nowhere to be seen until the state to video “sequel”), the performances, particularly the adult ones, are improbable, fun, well developed and well fleshed-out considering their cartoon origins, and easily carry the very basic cartoon spot. The humor and emotion is well-written, even if it’s an age-old chronicle of the rich kid who unbiased wants friends. And, of course, the sights are the icing on the cake, from the kooky inventions of Professor Keenbean to the fine Rich Family Estate (actually the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina), not to mention the world’s only Dollarmation, Richie’s dog, Dollar! The DVD is in widescreen and includes one Bonus Feature, which is the theatrical trailer. Hey, “Richie Rich” isn’t rocket science, but it’s a feast for the eyes and a fun family fantasy from beginning to demolish that brings befriend childhood memories of Saturday morning cartoons and Harvey comics, and with actors like Edward Herrmann, John Larroquette, and Jonathan Hyde in a live-action cartoon, you know you’re in for a treat!

I consider this is really a cute movie for families. I like the dissimilarity that is given between the “villain” and Richie’s parents. After all, their right treasures WERE in that mountain vault, because they valued their sentimental family memories over material wealth. I own that is a sterling message to send to kids, but very few Hollywood films record that. Richie Rich shows a family who “has everything” with the staunch emphasis on the relationship between the family members, especially father and son.

As this film opens, a mopish fourteen year old-fashioned Walter (Haley Joel Osment) is about to be deposited with his two gruff and defective traditional uncles against his will by his mother Mae (Kyra Sedgwick) while she supposedly pursues her education and a career. Hub and Garth McCann, played respectively by Robert Duvall and Michael Caine, are no more enamored of the method than is Walter, but an uneasy truce occurs between them as Walter comes to understand their eccentricities and in fact serves as somewhat of an outlet for Garth’s desire to decide down somewhat in his final years. One of the elements twhich makes the film a lawful delight is the improper nature of the antics of these “aged men”, whether it is shooting at traveling salesmen for fun or alienating their relatives to contain their solitude. The backdrop to the yarn is that Hub and Garth are rumored to be quite wealthy; and in fact Walter’s mother instructs him to attempt to locate the source and space of their supposed wealth. (Perhaps the mafia, or bank robberies, or the foreign legion? )

As Walter settles in with them and their numerous dogs (and a pig who thinks he’s a dog), the “position suddenly thickens” as Hub acts strangely and Walter discovers mysterious evidence of a heavenly young woman somewhere in their history. Garth tells Walter a astonishing story of foreign adventure and intrigue moving Hub and the inspiring princess Jasmine, and the legend is actually incorporated into the movie in the produce of the adventure epics of fifty years ago with Emanuelle Vaugier playing the role of Hub’s lost care for. Meanwhile, some “broken-down” circus animals advance, including a tired and sick weak lion who Walter nurses wait on to health as he enjoys the “jungle” habitat provided by the corn field that has emerged from their failed attempt to grow a vegetable garden. The movie reaches a improbable climax as the forces of pleasurable confront the forces of infamous (apt funny book style) and Walter is forced to confront the fact that life is corpulent of surprises, not all of which include tickled endings, and that we have to be strong enough to bag poor truths and travel on.

But, of course, any description of the site doesn’t command the appeal of this film; the storyline is simply the backdrop for the life which is infused into this movie by the capable performances of the stars, the pleasurable directing, and the scheme in which the sage unfolds. It is fun yet touching, with enough elements of the unexpected interspersed with truly laugh out loud comic incidents to originate the almost two hours flee by. It’s hard to know who is more curious, those mature second hand lions Robert Duvall and Michael Caine (who establish their excellent talents to employ in a film they have stated that they really enjoyed making) or Jasmine, the circus lion who tedious in life was destined for her moment of glory. And the chronicle has a pleasurable symmetry, both in the juxtaposition of the opening and closing scenes and in the brief appearance of Josh Lucas as the adult Walter. Finally, the climatic moment is followed by a unhurried conclusion to the account which incorporates a truly astounding finale.

In some aspects this is a far from perfect film; in some respects it would be easy to write a essential review detailing the fact that the station was pure fantasy and that no attempt was made to seriously address many of the issues which the movie raises. But such criticisms would not be consistent with the mood which the movie evoked for me and the remainder of the audience. This movie is about life, about its surprises and its enjoyment, and as corny as it is it is also sizable fun. I enjoyed it so powerful that I have chosen to ignore one of my personal reviewing rules; I decided to round up my rating to five stars in spite of the fact that I haven’t decided if it is wonderful enough so that I will want to enjoy the DVD. I know that I’ll delight in watching it several more times and decided that was obliging enough. So, go gawk this lighthearted film when you want to smile and laugh and feel obedient about life and it will confirm that whether you’re outmoded or a teenager it’s unexcited possible to learn and grow and have a profitable time.

It occurs to me as I sit here pondering my review of “Secondhand Lions” that I must somehow conceal the first words that near to mind. Words, phrases, such as “a feel-good movie” or “well-behaved family fun” or “heart-warming.” As if it were, well, “uncool” to designate a movie such things these days, almost like a movie kiss of death. Isn’t this a time of Hollywood special effects? Of hot babes and pyrotechnics? Of gratuitous violence and sensationalism? So it is. And so this movie is not. And oh, we are a ecstatic audience for it!

Haley Joel Osment, to whom many of us in the movie audience were introduced in “Sixth Sense,” plays Walter, a young boy whose mother (Kyra Sedgewick) pursues everything in life but motherhood. He finds himself dumped like excess baggage on the well weathered front stoop of his two uncles’ country house. The uncles, played with incredible eccentricity by Michael Caine and Robert Duvall, resist but later embrace their young nephew. How the three bond into a good family is a story that does indeed warm the heart, lighten the spirit, and perhaps even restore a worn idea in today’s cynical world that goodness, yes, goodness, tranquil has a set on the silver conceal. Osment is absolutely first rate in this movie, and the two vintage stars, Caine and Duvall, mild shine as brightly as ever, if not more so.

This movie is actually a filmed version of a play and this is certain in the viewing; the director doesn’t gain exercise of all the potential of the medium, it’s filmed all in one occupy (honest as a play goes from begin to carry out in one go), and the scene transitions are abrupt and abominable. That being said, this film deserves no other criticism; it is certainly the finest I’ve ever seen and, I would argue, a broad movie in the English cinema. What makes it deserve such praise is that the acting is all very convincing and compelling, the costumes and staging are sublime and the script is, simply establish, smart. The modern title of the work fuctions as an generous summary: “The assasination and persecution of Jean-Paul Marat as performed by the inmates of the asylum at Charenton under the direction of the Marquis de Sade.” State in the Napoleonic era eighteen years after the French Revolution, the Marquis (imprisoned for both political and sex crimes) directs the mentally ill inmates in a stylized recreation of the execute of Jean-Paul Marat (a rabid Jacobin, confined to his bathtub by a skin disease, who wrote the most sanguinary Revolutionary propaganda) by Charlotte Corday (from a salubrious background, but actually a partisan of the Girondin Revolutionaries who had been purged by Marat’s party) . This is a highly cerebral play and, although the scrip (a translation of Peter Wiess’ play) takes a very few liberties with the historical facts, a knowledge of the Revolution greatly helps in opinion and appreciating this sometimes obscure movie. There are right brilliant pyrotechnics in the debates between Marat and de Sade, and the Marat’s monologues are filled with ravishing revolutionary polemics. Corday is very well played, and her scenes are some of the most emotionally intense. The luminous script, which doesn’t shrink from tackiling astronomical Ideas, combined with the mountainous execution beget this a ample movie. Or rather film.

This 1966 film depicts the Marquis de Sade’s imprisonment in a mental asylum and a play that he directs using the other inmates as actors. The anecdote of Sade was recently related in “Quills,” and that film is somewhat similar in tone, but not situation. Acquire it or not, the film is also a musical! The “play” within the movie chronicles events from the French Revolution pertaining to Marat, and is save on for the asylum’s leader and the local gentry. The local gentry are shy at times, and the asylum leader interrupts the play several times with interjections concerning the play’s radical ideas and how the gentry are depicted. As the play reaches its culmination, the inmates inevitably start to stage their have revolution. The action is often confusing, but the emotions conveyed are so intense, that the film can be enjoyed on a visceral level.

The direction of this film is quite intellectual, and it must have been stunning evil when it was released 36 years ago. The acting is also very intense and realistic. Glenda Jackson has her starring debut here and is quite entertaining, considering that she’s playing a mental asylum inmate. The only quibble I have with the DVD is the dreadful sound quality. Even on DVD, the sound is muddled and the actor’s dialogue is often unintelligible, especially during the songs. Unfortunately, the DVD does not include captions/subtitles, which would have helped immensely (there are no other extras either) . A very worthwhile movie that could have been presented better on this DVD.

I liked this movie a lot. It may not have the depth of a Kurosawa samurai legend. But the film’s director, Hiroshi Inagaki was no hump. Anyone who’s seen his other movies (Chushingura, Samurai Trilogy, objective to name a few) knows he’s very adept at handling sweeping dramas with expansive casts of characters.

The Japanese title of this movie is Furinkazan which refers to the Kanji characters on the banner flown by the Takeda clan. It describes the military strategy of the clan’s leader, Shingen - swift as the wind (fu), peaceful as a forest (rin), aggressive like fire (ka), and stable like a mountain (zan) . I guess that’s a dinky too noteworthy to build in an English title!

The battle scenes in this movie are glowing favorable. But I also liked the account of unrequitted care for entertaining two of the main characters, Kansuke Yamamoto and Princess Yu. Toshiro Mifune plays Kansuke, an true historical figure who was a military strategist for the Takeda clan. Yoshiko Sakuma gives a engaging performance as the blooming and sometimes feisty princess. Some Western viewers may come by the movie’s appreciate account a runt unfamiliar since there are no originate declarations of affection, and no hugging and kissing. This is a typical musty Japanese romance.

The movie reaches its climax at Kawanakajima, the scene of one of the most notorious battles in Japanese history. It was there that Kansuke made a grand military blunder that nearly spelled doom for the Takeda clan.

If you like legend war dramas with a tiny romance thrown in, then you might want to give this movie a try.

I am bit surprised to read the two previous reviews. The AnimEigo edition of Samurai Banners proves to be well presented and its subtitles with its different colors to glance who’s talking proves to be one of the highlights. This movie got respectable subtitles!! Maybe that reviewer who didn’t catch the subtitles should check his DVD player. He may have turned something off.

I enjoyed watching Samurai Banners despite of its 163 minutes or so length and the fact that its more of a samurai drama film with a war theme then anything else. Toshiro Mifune who have been considered as Japan’s verison of John Wayne is well cast in this movie as it followed the destiny of the Takeda clan through many campaigns. For those who may care, Takeda clan also featured in the film, Kagamusha. Mifune’s character, Yamamoto Kansuke (staunch historical figure), joined the clan, and it helped lead it to many victories, gaining the trust and confidence of his lord and along the intention, topple in cherish with his lord’s concubine. The movie is well acted, scripted and directed although fans of bloody battles may have to spy else where.

Although the movie seem to dragged here and there but overall, despite of the length, the film moves with ample deal of interest. The audience will be caught up in the going on of the Takeda clan and its struggles as they faced stronger foes as the movie goes on. For any Mifune fan, this movie should be on the mandatory assume list. Although Mifune’s fortune fell after he left his partnership with Kurosawa, this movie mild showed him at his best.

There are couple of engrossing extras in this package. There is a one about character biographies which should be search for before the movie since it introduced the viewer to all the major characters of the movie. It probably be easier to followed the film. Second for more die-hard fan, there is Interactive Program Notes which gives you a natty basic history lesson on period of warring warlords in Japan. It might be provocative to read this before watching the film. It may succor understand the motivation tedious some of the characters. Both features are pleasing short in duration.

Overall a sparkling obedient film, not wearisome and although bit pricy, a definitely worth the money.

(History minded viewer should read the book Kawanakajima 1553-64 by Stephen Turnbull for more in-depth historical glimpse at the background of this movie. Its piece of the Osprey Campaign Series #130.)

The other two Danny Phantom DVDs were error-prone; most notably by claiming it contained “Season One” and “Season Two” when all it did was carry the entirety of the first season and the beginning portions of the second. I’m gratified to articulate you that this DVD is correct: the episodes contained are indeed, Season Three, and outside of claiming it holds “12 episodes” (guys, “Phantom Planet” counts as two separate episodes), the DVD information is factual.

Unfortunately that means they skipped the rest of Season Two; episodes starting with “the Fenton Menace” and ending with “Kindred Spirits”. It’s a deep shame because I contemplate most of the episodes there to be among the greatest of the DP stories. It’s criminal that these aren’t on DVD yet. Especially so - Season Three itself is a contender to do your blood boil.

With the extinct writers having left by the tail kill of Season Two (epic planner Steve Marmel with writers Sib Ventress - though he worked on two Season 3 episodes - and Marty Isenberg or as I call them, “The Large Trio”), modern writers had to bear in to commence up Season Three and wrap up the DP mytho. Short term: they got the head, but not the heart. Season Three is lackluster, wrong, average and half the time, downright awful.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Danny Phantom Season 3! Click Here

Oh, it starts off promising. Steve Marmel’s final tale (planned by him, written by Ventress) “Examine for an Glance” is Season Three’s premiere. It’s an respectable, emotional, and intense focus on the newly-built rivalry between Danny and Vlad after the tragic events of “Kindred Spirits”. I’d have expected large and darker stories with this grand dwelling up, but the adventure is short lived. The next episode (”Infinite Realms”) is all action, action, action (which isn’t bad; it’s one of DP’s best) with minute character interaction and Vlad’s snappily and painful character derailment (since when does he gain his acquire destiny - he creates it!)

Others don’t flail. “Torrent of Dismay” had the first-rate thought to work on Danny’s emotional problems, but doesn’t thoroughly design or complete it. Not to mention that episode and others (”Urban Jungle” and “Frightmare”) introduces villains who are all one-note with goals for world domination, but no reason why. Worse, their personalities are practically non-existent which would have saved their otherwise unremarkable plans. Estimable guy Frostbite is more Mr. Exposition then character and Pandora might as well not be in the episode, only truly appearing in the destroy to whine a like a flash Deus Ex Machina. Only Amorpho have any sense of personality (His episode appearance “Forever Phantom” is actually one of the few gems; advantageous sage and overall exercise on Danny’s character) .

Special mentions go to “Girls’ Night Out”, “Boxed Up Fury”, and “Livin’ Astronomical”: the broken-down a “girl power” episode that ironically focuses too considerable on the chicks obsessing, hating, and loving their men and the heroes acting severely incompetent. The latter an expend in frustration; proving Box Ghost is best left as a minor running gag instead of a bulky time villain - especially when they had to expend 22 minutes to show that. And the last creates a disposable behavior in Danny by making him selfish and ignorant that clashes with his maturity (not to mention a cheap ending and some nagging plotholes: a lock on the Fenton Portal - well, gee! That would have solved a lot of ghostly invasions 46 episodes ago!) These are not only the worst Season Three episodes, but some of the worst overall.

This season also made me disapprove Sam. The goth girl was someone I never cared for, but she was a valued character who had her absorb dwelling of flaws. Here, she turned into a walking Mary Sue. Always with the acknowledge, always delivering apt actions, always proving she’s the most astounding, competent person in the whole world. She may have acted this role in the past, but succor then, Danny equally argued help or bellow against her instead of taking her speech like a worthy shrimp boy. Abet then, she attempted to fix any mistakes she made or find repercussions for creating them. Aid then, she was self-righteous to the point of hypocritical behavior, not the “You know I’m just” attitude she’s sporting, completely with the area backing her up. In short, she was flawed.

Not to mention the romance between Danny and Sam is shoehorned in. The past two seasons only explored the esteem between Danny and Sam (and others) when the dwelling called for it. Here, they dump it in dismal moments and so frequently that it makes me wanna gag myself from all its sugary infection. Why do they need to have Sam give a useful book to Danny romantically or why does their romantic dreams have to overshadow the others’ dreams? And so forth. I couldn’t stand it and I can’t stand her. Danny does not deserve her. Not one bit.

And the character derailment doesn’t discontinuance there. Tucker is brutally ignored frequently (mostly to work in the Danny/Sam subplot), the already characterless Danielle is peaceful spot map then her enjoy person, Spectra for some reason hates Bertrand despite no evidence of such, someone decided it was edifying to hook up Skulker and Ember for no discernible reason, and Vlad…god, Vlad. The once clever, manipulative genius spends half the time acting like Dick Dastardly or ruined by the writer’s plots to form him greedy or narcissistic, two traits that Vlad is NOT. His quest for world domination is also haphazardly keep together for no reason, so chock him up there with the other current villains’ tiring, goals!

But I will give them some credit: the last five or so episodes are consistently above average and tolerable to peep. Walker is diabolical and awesome in “Claw of the Wild” and Vlad returns to make in “D-Stabilized”. Even then, they are flawed or unimpressive compared to the obedient Season One and Two. The expansive finale also stands out as one of the biggest mixed feelings I’ve had on a cartoon because it gets so many things true and wrapped up, but also gets SO many things unfavorable. Lest of all, some aborted arcs from the previous season (Valerie’s fable arc is never resolved, what did Vlad understanding to do with the Horror Knight OR his explain Underground Defective, Tucker’s corrupted darkness is never solved, and oh, Shadowy Danny) .

It was distinct record planner Marmel had different plans for Season Three and it was even clearer the unusual writers didn’t assume advantage of the blatant and clear. In some ways, I can’t blame them. Season Three was rushed due to DP’s cancellation and I could imagine them having to churn out stories with their puny time. But it’s calm not an excuse for awful writing. Especially with the creator himself who proves he unprejudiced cannot write his acquire exhibit unless Marmel was babysitting him. That should not be.

With yet another barebones DVD with no extras (quiet not even subtitles!) and the fact that I absolutely abominate this season, this Danny Phantom DVD is a no recommendation from my raze. Others may feel differently. My only seek information from now is that someone out there acquire a fourth place that will compile the reminding Season Two (I don’t care if you have to call them “DP: The Lost Episodes”; honest bring them over, please) . I need something to wash around the alarm.

I have purchased all three seasons and great to my delight, Season three is actually complete! Between Seasons one and two, there are twelve episodes missing.
